‘John Ryan Remembered’

In IDS on August 8, 2011 at 4:34 am

There’s a great story on former IU President John Ryan coming out in Monday’s IDS.

When John Ryan announced his retirement from the position of IU president in 1986, the news didn’t make many waves with the student body. Even the staff of IU’s yearbook, the Arbutus, buried the announcement in a roundup of other random news items from that spring. But by the time 81-year-old Ryan died early Saturday at IU Health Bloomington Hospital, his list of admirers was long. His list of accomplishments at IU may have been even longer.

The staff did a great job updating online with a breaking news story and posting to social media when the news of the former president’s death was released.

But in the print edition, the story ran without a byline. Check out the top of the front page here:

What do you think? No byline puts the focus on the story, the man who passed away, but how big of a difference does it make to put the reporter’s name on top?
